Pat Bowie's mid-60's date for Prestige, the first of two leader albums she ever recorded with Prestige. While the style and scope of Out of Sight! positions this singer as new jazz act, her vocals boast a soulful edge that's a given, which plainly suggests the greater influence of R&B, if anything, the album fails to properly exploit the full extent of Bowie's talents, relying too much on familiar ballads and standards instead of more contemporary and complementary material. That being said, this is still a very nice record, with skillfully nuanced small-combo backing (by real pro's that can and will comp the vocalist). With pianist Ray Bryant, guitarist Kenny Burrell, and bassist Milt Hinton and tenor saxophonist Seldon Powell buoying Bowie's lithe interpretations of songs like Cole Porter's "What Is This Thing Called Love?" and "Get Out of Town." Now I still give this 4 stars (backing band) and it's now been re-issued as a two-fer (2 LP's on one CD) by Jazz Beat in 2008. ~ oldhppierick
