No other band shows such intent or such originality in musickal efforts.
Theze tracks might be considered the missing link in their rekordings."

"Vivisection" could have been CABARET VOLTAIRE immediately before "Mix Up" with slappy drum machine set to a doped pace and emotionless vocals. "Flesh On Flesh" follows a similar style - and despite being released several times on various SC recordings sounds even more primal here. And this track is somehow tighter here, being fresher and less of a cliche for them to play. "Inspiration" could be the previous track remixed. Again the CABS atmosphere is laid out blatant and obvious - minimal, dubby and moody - not that you'd probably pick up on it further down the line. "Lizard Priest" sounds more like a stripped-down CHROME circa "I Am The Jaw" (although nothing like that track). "The Selfish Sin" comes over more like early NEW ORDER or late JOY DIVISION given a more experimental electro makeover. You get the impression from the lyrics that this is the prototype for "Babes Of Babylon". "Under The Green Sky" show their later style of almost Tribal music forming. Moody and, stripped down raw, probably more enjoyable than their later, fuller sound. "The Distant Cry" is an instrumental which has a creepy atmosphere, despite the fact that the 'beat' - a sort of grizzled sizzle - is quite far to the front of the mix. Meandering explorations of noise which the later, shinier group seemed mostly to avoid - must be a gland thing. "Raindance" is a bit of a filler track - mainly a constant pattering of drums, claps thru reverb, voice snatches and ZEWIZZ singing tunelessly to assay his nerves while he ventures into the darkness of the basement. "Fetish" is a standard for SC - even here in primal form it has a certain Tribal appeal which later, polished versions seemed to lack. Whispered vocals make it more of a ghost track than solid flesh and blood. "Dreams While Drowning" is what an interim group between THROBBING GRISTLE and PSYCHIC TV might have made. MUTLEY the cartoon dog seems to make an appearance on "Her Second Skin" - what does he want? A medal? The music is even lower and more passive, with ZEWIZZ's obsession with things sexual appearing here, singing (or rather darkly whispering) his interest in women in uniforms. "Kiss The Whip" - another track which has followed them for years closes the album. And it's about the most mature track here - later versions have changed little from this early view.Actually not a bad album. Stripped down and immature (ahem) they have a certain charm which seems to wear out some years further down the line. As mentioned above, this is around the same value qualitywise to "Mix Up", so judge it from there.Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
