There is Nothing is their third studio cassette (they also released a live cassette during this time period). Like their previous releases, the earliest release of There is Nothing came with a black cassette, and a standard paper inlay, which was then later issued in a glossy green inlay and yellow (and later, clear) cassette. The Ozrics really made a big leap in musical quality with this one. As good as their previous releases were, room for improvements were needed, and this certainly is in the right direction. Here you get the original "O-I". It's still very recognizable to the one on Pungent Effulgent. "The Sacred Turf" is just an amazing rocker, with Ed's unbelievable guitar playing. "Jabular" features electronic percussion and spacy synths. The band records the most amount of reggae numbers than anything they ever done before or since with "Staring at the Moon", "Crab Nebula", and parts of "Kola B'Pep". Of course, you will never mistake this for Bob Marley, it's still Ozric space rock. I understood why the band would venture in to reggae on occasions was because they liked how their audiences were hopping when they performed one of these pieces live. There's also the original "Eternal Wheel", which is so very unrecognizable from the one on Erpland. This one is very dominated by electronic percussion, and it's only the synth part that you can even recognize it from the one on Erpland. Another great improvement with this release was they finally got their mixing done right, so it's easier to hear all the instruments properly. I got a feeling someone taught them how to use a mixing board properly or they simply had the funds to buy a better one. On Erpsongs and Tantric Obstacles, the drums were often too in the front, and Roly's bass playing couldn't always be heard. Not here. They finally got it where it sounds more professional. Drums where they are supposed to be, to support the rhythm section and not sound so up front, and Roly's bass playing can be heard much easier, sometimes done where it's heard up front, especially when he played fretless bass. The band started witnessing some lineup changes shortly after the release of this cassette. Original drummer Tig (Nick van Gelder) had left, to be replaced by Merv Pepler and John Egan who helped the Ozrics release some of their finest material ever. This was the very first ever Ozric cassette-era release I ever tried, I bought this as a CD reissue on Dovetail back in 1997, just as I started up my Ozric collection. Now I own the true original cassette. Anyways, I never regretted buying this, and while Sliding Gliding Worlds is considered their best cassette, you can't go wrong with There is Nothing.

Maybe it'd be nice to start adding that information to these releases, to preserve it? Just a helluva lot of [Uncredited] to use!

I had seen that link before myself because I do visit the Ozrics website and message board (although I don't post anything there). I have always suspected that their early cassette albums did not always feature full band involvement. For example, the use of drum machines that obviously don't sound like it's done by a real drummer (be it Nick van Gelder or Merv), or heavily electronic pieces (such as "Tidal Otherness" from Erpsongs) that had very little band involvement. I wondered who was doing the flute on There is Nothing, I couldn't believe it was Roly! I knew it couldn't be John since he hadn't joined the band yet.

Even though I'm not the biggest fan of this particular cassette, taste is taste. However, recently Brandi made the true performing lineups of each tune of the tapes known on the Ozrics messageboard. Apparently Roly performed on just a few of the tape tracks. The information is available here: http://ozrics.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1338
