Spice Doubt is a very interesting and unique live release. It was broadcast online and recorded with the band doing live renditions of some of their greatest tunes in front of an audience consisting only of the studio technicians! As a result there is none of the usual enthusiastic cheering of their audience and that obviously takes away some of the pleasure of listening to a live album. But what about the music?Coming out six years after Live Underslunky, it inevitably contains mostly newer material and there are no common tracks between those two albums. Even the older tunes here hadn’t been released in live versions before. Eternal Wheel, Sploosh! and Dissolution are presented here for the first time and they are all fantastic, especially Sploosh! which always comes out live infinitely better than the version on Strangeitude. The newer tracks are also played really well, though Rad occasionally overdoes some of the fills. My favourite of those would be Oolite Grove & Citadel Jam, superb performance by every band member here. Finally, we get the unreleased title jam. This was subsequently released in a studio version (superior in my view) on Swirly Termination retitled Space Out.Though the sound is probably the clearest of all Ozrics live albums, I have a couple of complaints: some of the sounds used are of a really shrill frequency that almost hurts my ears. Also, at times I get the feeling that the instrument sounds are too distinct from each other and don’t blend well enough to make a coherent whole. I must stress here that these faults are not evident throughout the whole album, but in places. Despite all that, the original limited edition sold out in a few weeks. Maybe it had something to do with the line up, or maybe it was the really imaginative packaging: the jewel case was inside a transparent plastic pocket containing some sort of gooey liquid and some floating fish! So weighing the pros and cons, you get a satisfying setlist, some brilliant performances, the only full-length live album to feature the Ed-Jon-Seaweed-Zia-Rad line up and impressive packaging. You also get some production issues, no audience and slightly short duration – I would have loved to hear a proper version of Vita Voom by this line up – it rocked whenever I saw it. If you are (or are on the verge of becoming) an Ozrics addict of course you need this as much as everything else with the Ozrics name on it, though maybe not right now. If not, check out Undersluky, Sunrise Festival and Pongmasters (suggested order) first and leave this album together with Live Ethereal Cereal last. 8/10
