Notes

Inspired by Chicago's AACM and Woodstock's Creative Music Studio, a small group of Vancouver composers and improvisators founded the New Orchestra Workshop (N.O.W.) in 1977. Since then, N.O.W. has weathered times of feast and famine (government fundings vs. self-promoted events) and emerged with an impressive record of contribution to the West Coast contemporary music scene. The membership of the workshop has undergone some changes over the years, but today's nine person group includes several of N.O.W.'s earliest members.
The five ensembles represented on this CD consist of the members of the Workshop plus a fine cross-section of Vancouver improvisors.
As we enter the 1990's, it becomes increasingly clear that, despite the globalisation of culture, every part of our world has its own unique character. This vital music reflects a culture indigenous to the West Coast of Canada.
