Comments:
Cel
Tony Rooley and Jim Tyler took London by storm in the 1970s, playing to packed houses, unlikely though that may seem for a lute duo. They blew the dust off the repertory, blew the dusty, staid image of the lute away as well, and made everything seem exciting. But after “Renaissance Duets” and this album, they went their separate ways: Tony to direct the Consort of Musicke and Jim eventually to the Julian Bream Consort. The pieces are mostly playable playable on two classical guitars (by tuning the 3rd string down to F#), and the album was a massive inspiration in my early years, together with editions of the sheet music edited by the late Robert Spencer. The rear of the cover contains notes on the pieces by Tony (in English, French & German), and there is also an insert within detailing the instruments and the sources of the music (plus a reproduction of the poem that is the source of the album title, “The louer complayneth the vnkindness of his loue”, by Wyatt).I like this album as much as Jakob Lindberg & Paul O’Dette’s "English Lute Duets", which is saying a great deal. The total time of the present album is 51'04".
