Since Jose Cid is better known as a pop artist, most progheads would simply avoid him like the plague, except for his 1978 album 10.000 Anos Depois Entre Venus e Marte. Did he do anything else in the world of prog? Yes, there was Vida (Sons do Quotidiano), an EP he released on Decca in 1977, pretty much a precursor to the 10.000 Anos album. Then there's Onde, Quando, Como, Porque Cantamos Pessoas Vivas, with Quarteto 1111, a group Jose Cid was in. Apparently Quarteto 1111 was considered radical in Salazar/Caetano-era Portugal, as those dictatorships banned many of their songs. This 1975 album came after the dictatorship in Portugal had ended (Portugal's dictatorship ended one year before Spain's). This was Cid's first foray into progressive rock (earlier material was more psychedelic and pop), an album divided into two parts. While it don't have the spaciness of 10.000 Anos, he really lays the album thick with Mellotron, all over the place, with brass and strings, for some strange reason, he doesn't go near the tron choir like he did on Vida and 10.000 Anos. He also uses Minimoog. His voice is still unmistakable, but this isn't exactly complex prog. There are some great proggy passages, but there are some passages the group goes into ballad mode, but it's not bad. It's that type of balladry I often hear from prog bands in Romance speaking countries, like the Italian prog bands. So if you enjoyed 10.000 Anos, and wondered if Jose Cid had anything else worthwhile in the world of prog, this is a good one to try. But warning: I have heard some of his other (non-prog) stuff, particularly "Um Grande Grande Amor" and it's horrible.
