Notes

Once upon a time in the vanglorious world of hip-hop, the DJ was the most vital component of the artform. The DJ existed before the emcee and was the sole caretaker in moving the crowd. (S)he originated the “mixtape” long before 50 Cent decided to spit 16 bars over the “hottest beats” at the moment. So what has happened to those days? Well…I’m not sure if I can answer the question but French producer, Djimon responds with some Real Shit.

Real Shit follows the same vein as most producer-based albums (such as The Chronic, Soul Survivor, etc…) where the DJ/producer commandeers the album and showcases some up-and-coming talents to the world. In this case if you are familiar with some of the underground talents such as Tanya Morgan and the Justus League then you may be in for a bit of a treat.

The album is laced with boom-bap drums and feel-good soul samples from front to back. “The Undefined v2.0″ is the ultimate headnodding track for this album. The horns create a beautiful soundscape for The Testimony to rip over. Also, underrated Justus League member, an angry Sean Boog doesn’t hold back his feelings about his critics on “Fuck What You Heard” as he raps “You cats bitch and complain like a chick on the rag period/ You’re all bitch like your living in drag..” He clearly has a lot to get off his chest.

Real Shit gives hip-hop fans of the golden years what they have been waiting for. If you are looking for raw, dusty boom-bap beats and want to discover underground acts that are on the neverending quest of making themselves a household name, then this album will be the vehicle to transport you back to the golden, vanglorious days of the DJ/producer.
