A cd with a "Relaxation Spa" blurb on the cover with references to a long lost sun-worshipping Central American civilization, the whole thing just screams of sickly sweet panpipes and big colourful hats... The sleeve notes go on about the great celebration of Katun and how the people sought enlightenment from prayer and elaborate ceremonies, and using this soundtrack the artist tries to illustrate the divine vision being revealed. Further it is suggested that mankind in the 21st century has long lost the ability to hold on to that which is sacred and precious, and that there is a lesson to learn. But wait... The Mayan kingdoms were not peaceloving societies of philanthropists. In fact it was a culture plagued by wars, and human sacrifice was the norm to please the gods. Scientists claim that the purity of children made them the best offerings. Armed with this basic knowledge, let's approach the Yucatan Maya as seen in the eyes of Avgerinos. And let's face it, this man has not been completely fooled by the new age brigade. Instead he takes us on two longform journeys through brooding and bubbling soundscapes that slowly transform into more droning and tribal ambience of sorts. The music wouldn't sit out of place on eg. the Hypnos label roster. It might not convey images of prisoners of war ascending the great pyramid in Tikal to be sacrificed by the priests, but on the other hand it skillfully paints a picture of a slightly alien civilization right here on Earth.
