This compilation is very special to me. I believe I bought the CD in 1997 by chance when I was 16 years old. I did not know what to expect. I did not value the music much initially, probably because it was an uncommon style of music to me. However I found myself listening to the tracks again and again and was amazed that I never seemed to become bored or tired of them, rather the opposite - they are deep. In my opinion they are very well arranged, mixed, very playful and full of nuances. I can feel lots of love and care went into making them. I might be biased by nostalgia.I tried to find similar music ever since but found nothing that would compare or match, it's actually frustrating. This is the holy grail, that perfect mix of dub/breaks/techno, it has a certain innocent/positive/naive vibe (my subjective interpretation) and virtuous if not masterful application of echo/reverb/fx and as I said I find the mixing/arrangement to be incredible. Edit: The track "Rewinder" stands out in comparison, being more badass/agressive with it's distorted drums and that acid bass while all other tracks are more mellow. Thinking of it, I think that track is an especially rare kind. Unfortunately. That said, every track feels very unique, when listening it's almost as if one is exploring a planet.I then bought Serious Dropout volumes 1 and 2, loving some of the tracks too but in terms of liked tracks per disc they don't match volume 3 in my book. I started tracing the artists/labels, collecting more of their music, finding more gems here but never anything comparable to that particular mix/sound/vibe found in these tracks, it simply appears to be that "once in a lifetime" kind of special that will never come back. Thanks to all contributing artists!Favorite tracks:The RiddimRewinderFuture ProgramsNatureFuck DubDing Dong Killer DeadSlicesTotally Different Edit:Many of the subsequent musical electronic "dub" pieces which I came across in my searchings were more of the simple, probably improvised kind, consisting of typical slow reggae drums with seemingly random blips and sounds drowned in long reverb tails without much else going on. While I like the nature of that sound I find it gets boring quickly and feels repetitive, lacking structure. The tracks on this disc on the other hand feel very much deliberately produced and have rich layers of sounds, as if the artists spend months on them. Huge difference. Again, this is subjective and maybe other individuals are super fond of the more classic dub music.
