It was the summer of 1995. 18-year-old me and five friends entered Ibiza and didn't sleep much the first five days or so (and not much more the days after that). Coming from hip hop and jungle, it was the first time I actually enjoyed the 4/4 beat of techno, trance, and even house music. Then, one day this old hippie dude in Ibiza Town handed us a flyer to some party not in a club but at some remote place on the island. Asked what it was he said something about "Indian trance". Well, at that time everything new was good and so we went. Boom! What a freaking awesome night! I had no idea what I just listened and danced to for 12 hours. I spent the next eight months or so trying to figure it out. Then some friend handed me over a tape containing this album. And there it was, "Indian trance", I was hooked and remained so for the years to follow...It is still the most iconic psy/goa album for me. Every single track is a unique gem on its own, well arranged, composed almost. Classic. Ever since I've spent a lot of time finding that kick again, and even if some tracks, artists and albums that followed were equally great, none of them ever had that impact on me. Listening to it now, 22 years later, it is still unmatched for me and laden with memories of warm. I wouldn't even know to pick a favorite track because they're all marvellous, but the one that sticks out, I guess, is Psychopod. But it doesn't mean much because every track is a doorway to its unique universe, except perhaps Doof - People in UFOs, that is a bit out of place compared to the rest of the album. If I remember correctly I even recorded a tape version without it when I bought the LP, ha.If Ibiza had popped my cherry, Phosphorescence made me fully appreciate it. And I am so glad I was there. My father introduced me to Jimi Hendrix' Electric Ladyland, I know what I will introduce my kids to.
