Krylon Worlds is a fantastical journey through the stars delivered with a strong Jazz vocal and a huge Hip Hop drum loop. It’s Nu Jazz, it’s different, and I love it! Who’s ever heard of this band? A bit of research reveals it’s actually one Jason Todd; a man better known for his later collaborations with DJ Epcot Center (what a great stage name that is!). The tune appeared on Todd’s only Album using the Vanishing System moniker, ‘Headcomputor’, which was released on CD in 2005. After that, Vanishing System er…vanished. The song title is just odd, as are the lyrics. Is it really just a fantasy journey or could it be an allegorical one? I discovered that Krylon was a brand of spray paint popular with graffiti artists around the time of this release. If that’s it, the song takes us into the world of that most cosmic of art forms. If not, please don’t spoil my enjoyment; I’d prefer to believe that a work of this quality has deeper meaning. What about musically? The vocal alternates between long, flat, notes and complex staccato parts; much like you might expect from a sax or flute. In fact, the sound of a sax shadows the vocal throughout the recording giving an added sense of depth. And that drum loop is something else. The snare hits hard and way behind the beat which makes for a laid back, cool-as-you-like, feel. Yet the power demands your full attention. It’s one tough groove and the combination makes for a hugely enjoyable listen. If you like your music somewhat leftfield, Krylon Worlds is a must have for your collection
