Notes

Actuel 35.

Gatefold cover.

Recorded June 1970.

Alvin Curran most probably refers to this record when he states that "a couple of French kids [which] we just took [...] in [the group] actually stole the name of the group and put out their own record" ("Live in Roma", ed. Daniela Margoni Tortora, Die Schachtel, 2010, pp. 156-157).

You can read the full transcript of the interview where Alvin Curran mentions this not being a MEV release here, it's in the last few paragraphshttp://www.thewire.co.uk/in-writing/interviews/mass-ornaments?SELECT%20*%20%20FROM%20request_redirect

As with the notes stated, that Alvin Curran has nothing to do with this release. This was Ivan and Patricia Coaquette, with Birgit Knabe, running off with the MEV name. The Coaquettes were involved in The Sound Pool (the proper MEV album thanks to Alvin Curran's involvement). Since this is the Coaquettes show, it's little surprise that it bears little resemblance to The Sound Pool. It's far less harsh and abrasive, but still avant garde. "Message" contains a droning synth (presumable a VCS-3) and strange ethnic percussion, as well as voices. "Cosmic Communion" contains a bunch of strange sounds of static and morse code, and a female voice speaking of "The age of destruction". What's really surprising is how this piece ends, in a cosmic folk manner, not unlike what you hear on the German Pilz label. Not-so-great vocals (this is no surprise, given MEV were basically a collaboration of musicians and non-musicians) singing cosmic hippie themes. It's strange for such an avant garde album, you see photos of the three involved on the original LP looking like flower children. But you will never mistake this for Jefferson Airplane, that's for sure. This album, for some strange reason, reminds me a bit of Brainticket's Celestial Ocean, as well as Adventure and Voyage, probably because of the ethnic percussion and spoken dialog. But it's much more avant garde than Brainticket. Interesting and worthy album.
