What happened to this guy? Two albums then nothing. This first album was genius and if released now would be massive.

YOU, ME AND US, Brooks’ debut album on Mantis, certainly follows in the footsteps of label head Martin Iveson, better known as Atjazz: the tempos are housey and the melodies are jazzy. The title track goes down a mellow route, and “Mastermix” takes a brighter, electro-party approach, while “Dripping in Gold” has a solid gold disco appeal. Brooks also seems to head into some slightly experimental territory, an approach that he’ll explore more fully with his second album: “Colour Me Bad” has a high-pitched wobble that throws a curious wrench in an otherwise smooth track, while “Wandering” has some clicky/glitchy percussion to accompany the simple guitar strumming. The sped-up vocals on “I Don’t Ususally Do This But…” add a nice, off-the-wall quality even if the track doesn’t develop much, as does the minimal sensibilities of “Clix.” “G Bash” introduces some African rhythmical patterns into the mix, while “Love’s Song (Repeat and Fade)” goes back to its dancefloor roots, without ever being predictable. This is unique house music, well worth your time.
