Being born when this 12" was released, I discovered about The Human League in the 1990's, while reading a book about "Horror Rock", and finding their name listed among the first wave of UK industrial bands, alongside Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire! Only later I came across "Dare" and their synthpop chart hits.Even if The Human League never was an industrial band, "The Dignity Of Labour" is definitely the closest Philip Oakey and co. came to such sound. Side A, especially "Part 2", is extremely cold, mechanical and dissonant, reminding a lot of what fellow Sheffield experimentalists Cabaret Voltaire were doing in their early years. Side B shows a different side of the band's instrumental electronics, heavily influenced by the German cosmic school of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze.
