Generally speaking, I'm not really a fan of the Ingoma stable, or any other imprint that used to try and charm with latin chants, reversed congas and what I referred to as Ricky Martin techno, but this release is special. The highly venerated and respected duo consisting of Mark Broom and Ben Sims drop a solid four tracker, packed with the usual dance floor rawness, tough beats and ravaging bass lines, but it's the inclusion of more jazz injeceted elements and the aversion towards over the top tribal chants that makes me come back to this one.Piano is a tough tribal based workout, with subtle filtered vocal over a pounding groove. Notice how the vocals are so tweaked and reworked you'll hardly recognize them as such. The beat drop after the break, whilst expected and obvious, is simply deadly in execution, the percussion is huge.Disko Psyko has a more funky and melodic vibe with its catchy, filtered jazzy disco loop and vocal, again maintaining a strong tribal groove. However, it's the cosy melody that sneaks in after a while which really cuts it for me. Again, the vocals are restrained, occasionally echoing in and out of the track. Every break is ended by short trumpet samples, increasing the anticipation before the drums are thrown back in.Emotion features a very effective housed up riff and sparse vocal loop, that injects some seriously funky overtones, as this production just rolls along, with sampled female disco vocals. This is the housiest tune of the bunch, and arguably the most refined one. The drums are not as intense, the pace is toned down a notch, the groove nails it to perfection, the vocals emphasize an overall soulful vibe. This one's an irresistible feet tapper & head nodder. Simple as that. Finally, on Flute the guys round things off with further jazzy based key loops, and muscular tribal grooves, that sit well with other older Symbolism and Theory records. A very straight forward techno production, with incessant percussion, obese bass line response, yet it's all slightly alleviated by the jazzy elements. Great track! As stated before, much of this label's output is undesired under my record player's needle, but this one just works. Steering clear of all the work your body, shake your booty, whatever samples, and avoiding overly long and repetitive village chanting, the third installation of the Greenwich Allstars series opts for a Talking All That Jazz (pun intended) route, and it pays off. Add Emotion to the mix, which is one of the duo's more easy listening moments, and you've come around to having a properly crowd pleasing EP, without resorting to some of the more obvious elements these two used back then. I'd say a 4/5.
