Notes

Reissue of the tracks on the US CD version, hence tracks A4 and E2 (popularly known as 'Hankie' and 'Stone in Focus') originally released on WARPLP21 in 1994, are not included. The artwork with divided circles found within the gatefold and on the back cover is meant to represent the album tracks, but is faulty due to these two missing tracks. This pressing has been disowned by WARP, however it is licensed from Sire.

Sticker on front cover reads:
"a landmark of the Ambient genre: Richard D. James' soulful, electronic holy music continues to bewilder nearly two decades later. if11"

Issued in a gatefold cover. Includes an 11.5" by 11.5" semi-glossy single-sided paper insert.

Which track on this record is "Stone in Focus"? Or is it not on this LP?

RUL
Are you sure it's on the CD? It's not on the original UK 2xCD release as it's too long to fit on the CD.

anonymous
Not on this LP. Only found on original 1994 press or CD.

Truthcliff
I've had no issues with the 1972 pressing at all. There's not much in the way of background noise, and sounds crisp through the Technics system it's being played through. The only one issue there was is side C's label being applied as quite literally a slap-dash job, but that's about it.

Hasirri
All I've got to say is....there's a reason why the original press sells for over $100.Surface noise literally from start to end. Best track (by FAR) on the album completely omitted from the repress. Flimsy packaging. The list goes on and on.1972 pressings belong at charity shops beside musty herb alpert and barbara streisand albums.

monotronik
Well the original pressing is shit too so there's that. At least it's complete.

Purestone
I found the following comment on the Warp Facebook page regarding this release. Clearly it's not a bootleg or unlicensed, it's just licensed for US & Canada:'I work for Revolver USA, the distributor for the LP reissue - to be clear, the label only has the rights for the USA and Canada. And to be equally clear, this title is not a bootleg or a fake'.

Ariurin
A/B'd this with my CD copy and it sounds fine. Not going to say it sounds better, but... there's nothing obviously wrong. I'm gonna guess the people complaining either got bad pressings, or they forgot how much distortion and high end rolloff there is in the original material.

Kanrad
Just went to try to re-listen to this 1972 re-issue and after 4 minutes I took it off again and nearly threw it in the bin, that is how bad it sounds. I hate CD's but I am going to get the cd because this pressing is worthless. Don't waste your money, Warp will hopefully repress this soon. The 1972 version is terrible.

Zut
Come on Warp Records, do a repress of this please.

Hi_Jacker
This is a bootleg according to Warp: "SAW II = definitely fake/bootlegs... not licensed or released by Warp..."https://www.facebook.com/warprecords/posts/141481355970497

Inertedub
Well if that is true were did they get the masters from? because to most people me included the 1972 pressing is absolutely worthless because of the terrible sound quality.

Hystana
As read just below WARP's comment:"Paul Ashby: I work for Revolver USA, the distributor for the LP reissue - to be clear, the label only has the rights for the USA and Canada. And to be equally clear, this title is not a bootleg or a fake. The following are the credits from the vinyl package:"All songs written by RIchard D. James © Chrysalis Songs (BMI). All rights administered by BMG Rights Management (US) LLC. © 1994 & 2012 Sire Records Company. Produced under license from Sire Records Company. Manufactured by Rhino Entertainment Company, a Warner Music Group Company. All Rights Reserved. Made in the U.S.A. Marketed by International Feel LLC. 1972 PO Box 11444 Oakland California 94611 USA"

Acrobat
Why don't they do a repress of it then? It was released more than four years ago, I wonder if it's similar to when Plain pressed Loveless and it was technically a reissue in the states but in Europe it was considered a bootleg. Either way they are missing out on not doing a proper repress of it.

Goldendragon
Even if some of the pressings sound fine, doesn't change the fact it's missing two tracks ("Hankie", which is not present on Sire CD, and "Stone in Focus", original vinyl/cassette exclusive), so either way you'll get an inferior version of the album.

Brightcaster
Stone in Focus being the best track on the album, IMO.

Ffyan
I have had ZERO issues with the 1972 pressingsounds great & looks greatmuch love fromMICHIGAN

Moronydit
Bad pressing. Some but not all of the tracks (maybe a handful or so) have clicks and pops in them and the records themselves are visibly defective and wobbly in places which can be seen when they're in motion. Shame they didn't do a better job of quality control with such a timeless classic. How do you mess up 180g vinyl?!

Jake
I agree with the minority here--my copy sounds fantastic. I'm not sure if it was a quality control issue or what.

Mightsinger
Nearly impossible to listen to sides A-C, crackly, raspy junk. I tried to wash it, no change. Don't buy it.

Realistic
Lots of negative reviews here. Personally, I haven't had any problems - sounds great through headphones and on my setup. Technics 1200 MK2 and a higher-end Onkyo.

Ť.ħ.ê_Ĉ.õ.о.Ł
Me either!!! Im lost for words...clear, warm, no vinyl defects...do i own the same record as everyone else??? All i can suggest is that everyone go out and buy Luxman gear...cause this vinyl is perfect....

Anarus
I'm playing this on my cheapie little Crosley turntable and it sounds great! Very minor noise, but that could be my needle. I like it and couldn't pass it up for $32 sealed at a local record store. Cheers!

Minha
Yep the 1972 re-issue sounds like a 96kbps (at best) crackly, scratchy flat piece of shit.Absolute waste of money.

Kekinos
My copy of this sucks as well. Terrible quality pressing.F.u.c.k y.o.u 1972

Shou
Very disappointing... !!!!sound quality is bad!.. Noisy and no deepth whatsoever

Varshav
Sold mine in the end it's just not a good pressing.

Karg
As you know, the track 'titles' for this amazing album are photos (taken by Aphex Twin) displayed inside the gatefold. Now it appears to me that this reissue has used a number of photos that were NOT those of the original album art. I know, because I have the original album art. That means that the reissue label '1972' is not only providing an incorrect track listing, it is substituting its own track titles for Aphex Twins'. A bizarre decision that ruins this reissue as far as I'm concerned.

OTANO
I don't really have an issue with this reissue since it arrived in beautiful shape, included the paper insert, etc. Sound was pretty good as well, no skipping, no noise, crackles or pops. But i would still pay good money for a proper re-release by Warp that includes the two missing tracks.

Dangerous
If you see this for sale, whether IRL or online, CHECK TO SEE IF IT'S A WARP PRESSING! Do not buy anything Aphex related from 1972! Anything by them Aphex related is a rip off!

Nilarius
When is Warp repressing this classic ? There is no proper pressing of this album. Come on, they will sell like warm chocolatemilk.

Shaktizragore
Bought a copy earlier this year. Has very minor clicks and pops. Basically bought it to hear Rhubarb on vinyl at will. And months later, I just realized it's the 1972 pressing. So, I can't return it. Oh well - I'll buy a proper remaster when it comes. This will sit, unloved, in my collection. I'm not going to resell it or give it away - I don't want anyone else to hear SAW II in this "just meh," quality.Thumbs down, 1972.

Nakora
Rip off. Doesn't include the original pressing vinyl only bonus track "Stone in Focus", which is the whole reason to own this album on vinyl at all, AND it doesn't even include "Hankie" from the UK CD. So basically, this pressing is the worst way to experience this album. Cross your fingers that they eventually rectify this with a new reissue with the 2 tracks included. Until then, stay far away from this pressing and find those 2 tracks elsewhere, because they're essential.

Celak
I sent back my copy to the shop.It sounded horrible. Shame repress.

Iphonedivorced
Just got this. Quite crackly and it was sealed when I got it. Few pops so far whilst listening too. Shame. Labels are not central on some sides too. The noises on this pressing ruin the quiet music.

Bearus
Definitely inferior to the digital version. My brand new copy has distortion and a number of pops and cracks on the C-side. Fairly disappointing as this is one of my all time favorite albums.

Stoneshaper
From the Wikipedia page on the album:"Due to the limitations of the compact disc format, track 19 was removed from all CD pressings. This omission has since become standard, even for online retailers."So yes, I think it's a CD rip to vinyl...

The Sphinx of Driz
Mine sounds wonderful - maybe I've been lucky, or maybe they've got their act together. Certainly nice enough to tide me through until Warp get around to doing a repress with Stone In Focus and Hankie on.

Nalme
Although it does not have "Stone in Focus", this pressing (1972 records) sounds pretty good. My copy does not encounter distortion at all. Only bummer not the inclusion of the track already mentioned.

Bandiri
1972 RECORDS = this is what i call a RIP OFF

Olma
I have a terrible copy ! It's a shame they dare to sell this.Avoid!!!!!!

Alsardin
Is this just the CD tracks ripped to vinyl?

Damdyagab
Just realized mine came with two copies of disc 1 (side a and b) and is missing disc 2 (side c and d). If anyone has two copies of disc 2 somehow, hit me up! I have found listening to this to be quite wonderful. Hoping to hear the rest of it.

Bliss
Re: a lot of the distortion/noise complaints...bought my copy last Fall and had to exchange it twice before I got a copy I was satisfied with, and it still has some issues on the E side. Good luck.

NI_Rak
It really is a shame its missing stone in focus but, I must say, I was pleasantly surprised how good it sounded. I wish I was able to A/B it with the OG pressings tho.

Bluecliff
this release doesn't have stone in focus? really? damn, too bad. might not buy it then.

Sennnel
Not worth really, Stone in Focus makes this album what it is imo.

Cae
I have tinkered with my turntable all night with this, but Side 3 slips and slides and is very distorted. I may not have the most expensive turntable on the planet, but 500 bucks should get you decent sound!Other than that the packaging seems close to the B&W version I owned in the 90's. I guess I'll have to return it. :(

Sti
Bought this thinking that Stone in Focus was on it :( Argh, it's my fav from AFX.

Mojar
I think this is a legitimate release. It also comes with a insert and the mastering volumes are perfect. Sound quality is really nice as well.

Moralsa
This is not legitimate. A comment by Warp on their Facebook page regarding this release: “SAW II = definitely fake/bootlegs... not licensed or released by Warp.”

Sagda
Very happy this is available again on vinyl. Unfortunately with my copy, record 1 is riddled with "non-fill" issues (the "crackling grooves" that aaroninky mentions). Not in just one spot either, but at least 10 times throughout both sides of the first record. The second record is not nearly as bad as the first, and the third record is just about perfect. I'll be exchanging for a new copy and hoping for the best.

Elizabeth
Buy a copy that isn't pressed from CD

Vut
Mine has also a minor scratch on side one... affecting first two tracks :/ And it was a sealed copy.

Blacknight
I've thoroughly inspected mine and it seems to have come with two rather malign scratches in the record. A little disappointing considering they fall across good 20-30 second portions of two of my favourite tracks ('Rhubarb', 'Lichen') - but overall I'm very satified with the release as far as mastering and audio quality goes. Just wish there was perhaps a little more quality control and care with the wax itself! Overall for £30 though you can't really go wrong.

Tojahn
is this release limited? if so, to how many copies? thanks

Phobism
Does anyone else's version of this have a crackling groove on the start of Rhubarb? Very annoying, one of my favourite songs on the album. Between tracks A3 and A4.

Mavegelv
The Copy's i have here have 3 tracks on side A. So cannot find a crackling groove between A3 and A4.. there is no A4?

Binthars
I got some crackling on beginning of Track 2. Nothing serious

skyjettttt
thanks for the tip, is that also the 180 gr version, or are there even other versions around?

Togor
Lol everyone should say thanks to Mr Shield. To add another worry the to the vinyl tribe. Sound Quality is fantastic at my house. Even if Daft Punk is not Playing.....

Quamar
This and the SAW1 reissues are both bootlegs taken from one of the CD versions (thus the missing Stone In Focus).

Mr_Mix
According to a comment by WARP on their Facebook page this is not legit: “SAW II = definitely fake/bootlegs... not licensed or released by Warp.”

Faegal
So not a bootleg, but still mastered from the CD... I'll pass...

Beazerdred
This Re-issue is not comparable with the SAWI "made in china" bootleg with the most ugly Aphex Twin unworthy cover..

Eayaroler
This is not a bootleg as far is i can see. Bought it for my shop, got it yesterday. The cover is not a copy, all new label, production and license info is on the back. it states:19721972 po box 11444 oakland california 94611 USAC & P 1994 & 2012 Sire records company. @Borowczyk76 - I disagree As @easydata666 has pointed out, this is a legit repress on the 1972 label from midheaven.com
