This great new 12" - exclusively released for "National Record Store Day" on April 17 (!) - bodes well for DEVO's upcoming "comebac" 2010 CD due out soon, entitled "Something for Everybody." The A-side FRESH is prime DEVO with a retro, propulsive synth bass/drum track that borrows from "Freedom of Choice"-era tracks like "Don't You Know" - LOVE the GUITARS during the "solo break" - I hope that DEVO turns UP/brings back the guitars on their upcoming longplayer & recaptures the sound of its first three albums, which had the perfect balance between rock/synth. If radio stations like KROQ and KISS FM would take a chance and play this, DEVO could have their first radio hit on their hands in 20 years? The B-side, WHAT WE DO, is less than stunning, but still fun w/ that goofy/geeky robotic Devo vibe. Producer Greg Kurstin has worked with everyone from KYLIE to his own BIRD & THE BEE, and brings a radio-friendly electro sheen to the table. Overall, a return to form for Devo and their best single in ages. I look forward to their forthcoming CD, esp if it sounds anything like the taster tracks from the recent "Devo Song Study!" Extra points for the cool graphic sleeve design - remember when bands actually paid attention to LP/12" design?
