Liner Notes:
These acoustic (well, Laura uses an amp, and the Casio is electronic) recordings were made on Superchunk's Fall 2001 tour in support of the "Here's to Shutting Up" album. The week after the album was released we played 4 shows in one day at 4 different record stores here in North Carolina (covering such major media markets as Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and Greensboro), and the first 12 tracks here were recorded on that day. During our U.S. tour we also played at record stores in Dallas and Seattle, and the best-sounding songs from those in-stores (which also feature Annie Hayden as a 5th Superchunk member) comprise tracks 13-18. Some of these recordings are drawn from our own video recordings of the shows, others were recorded by fans nice enough to share their audio with us. With the knowledge that lo-fidelity live recordings of acoustic Superchunk songs would likely appeal to hardcore fans only anyway, we've included multiple performances of some songs here, for said fans who might enjoy hearing how certain songs might have evolved, or devolved, in the 1 1/2-month span between these recordings. Playing acoustically, and quietly, not being Superchunk's usual area of expertise, it's always a challenge for us to pull it off, and one never knows how it will go. But at the same time it hopefully sheds some new light on songs previously only heard at defeaning volumes. This is the first in a series of "official bootlegs" of Superchunk live recordings.
Thanks, Mac January 2002
