Ascension Presents… The Funky Lowlives is actually a collection of tracks and remixes by none other than The Funky Lowlives themselves, with their unique blend of Latin breaks, dub and jazz. “Wicked World” pours on the dub with some great vocals on top -- the track is reminiscent of Cat Steven’s “Wild World,” except much, much funkier. There are some classics here, like their remix of Boozoo Bajou’s “Divers,” or the percussively deep “Latazz.” They adds some nice breaks to “Brazilian Beat” by Masters at Work and make the Creature Project’s “Brutal High” considerably less brutal. An excellent introduction to the Funky Lowlives.
