Ten tracks from this interesting group opens with "Little March" - built on regular samples of smashing, chinking glass, metal & scraping light fixtures has very much an experimental approach - it actually seems to enter the realm of composition for moments, has a deliberate feel to it's chaos sounds. Edgy & disquieting. "Slow Blue Bite" actually has a stronger degree of tune, nodding a little towards TG or TEST DEPT with it's wind instruments (cornet -. possibly cylinders) combining this with found sounds like looped Gregorian chants & prepared piano. The result is a fascinating little experimental piece which puts then amongst such people as the above mentioned and, say, SPK & EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN. It reminds - most of something from "Goddodin". "Social Life" is built on a stark drum machine sound. combined with white raspberrys of noise, synths, oxygen tank bashes & taped sounds, all gelling into a great pre-"Zamia Lehmanni" SPK-like dance piece - combining various disconnected elements into an ever-changing thing of harsh, stark wonder. "Not Established" again uses such things as broken glass, found sounds & Gregorian chant, combining them with the help of a machine-like generator foundation into a more minimal, complex thing, full of slither-like fragments of sound. all appearing in clusters or individually. The foundation slips away, freeing the imbroglio of noises to create their own structures, filigree, broken things, chimes perceived by a mind gone mad. This could only be a soundtrack to an experimental film - it's just to descriptive to be anything else. "Aura (Number 7)" is a live recording which uses the atmosphere of a large space to paint it's Industrial portraits of wastelands & desolation of the human soul. Instruments include bass guitar, prepared piano, metal rack & a variety of pre-taped sounds. "Transmitted" uses radio noise, records, found music & chimes among other things to create something which transfornm from chaotic audio collage, through warm, calming loop tapes to something a lot more malign & moody - an atmospheric track which realises how it can be a composition without compromise, yet often doesn't care enough not to jump into the void of experimentation for it's own sake. "Recurrence" is a studio track using some of their favourite sound sources. The metal scraped form together into a sort of feedback fanfare while what sounds like a distant church bell keeps time. It grows, heading towards a nerve-twitching climax. Cold but awesome - chaos picks its own tune - this is a violin section from the orchestra of Hell. "Irresolution" is a short piece - noisy with it's alarm-like Tibetan Bowl & prepared piano to set nerves on edge. It swells, sinks & grows again, stark & grating. "Influence" is the longest track on the album at 8'30", sounding a lot like something which might be heard on one of Radio 3's more interesting programmes - combining effected cornet & a soup of voices, it visits looped choirs, classical guitar spangles & sudden dangerous shimmers of sound, all arranged into a brilliant work of noise & music - probably every bit as important as any other experimental work you care to mention. Perhaps this is going too far - perhaps that's being too lavish with praise - perhaps there's just too much deliberation here. But for my money, I'd say it's, if not a milestone work, then should at least be scrawled grafitti-like across such milestones as "Poeme Electronique" "Pax Britannica" & "Zamia Lehmanni" . Finally, the album draws to a conclusion with "Truth Withheld" - a fast, noisy piece whose instrument credits include 'Wagner, Zither & Fung Luo Gong'. Freeform & loud in parts, minimal & calming in others. this is not something you can easily sit back & relax to listening - stay alert - they like to lull you into complacency. then shock you back out of it. From bright walls of noise, through thin metal bashin' to grumbling bass death throes, this'll keep you alert. An important album - if you like who I've compared then to, I doubt you'll be disappointed. Pity there's no contact address - I'd like to know more.Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
