Since the middle of the 90s gypsy music from the Balkan has established itself to a global trend. Two persons have mainly influenced this trend: the director Emir Kusturica with movies like „Underground“ and „Black Cat, White Cat“, as well as the musician Stefan Hantel, who had the idea to combine Romanian music for brass instruments with club sounds.In his movies Kusturica did not just work with striking actors from the roma & sinti – minority Macedonia’s, but also let gypsy brass bands play in the background. The soundtrack was composed by his former partner Goran Bregovic, who is nowadays a world music superstar. In these tragedy comedies gypsies became persons to look up to and brass music was staged with much love and fun. An international audience recognized the Kocani Orkestar and the Boban Markovic Orkestar for the first time. According to this bands from Romania were touring the European orchestra stages in the following years. The exuberant energy that came from the musicians with their trumpets enthused more and more people.At the same time, around the turn of the millennium, electronic music was in a creative low. The dj Stefan Hantel from Frankfurt was experimenting, like many colleagues from the techno genre, with downbeat and lounge elements. Under the artist name „Shantel“, he released several lounge productions that were respected and established him as musician. During a trip to his his grandparents home country, he discovered the brass music of Romania and the Ukraine respectively. The release of the „Bucovina Club“- cd was a milestone for music from the Balkan. The combination of brass music, Klezmer elements with grooves from the club music genre didn’t exist before. Especially the advertising industry saw the potential of this new style that is called “Balkan Beats”. In many advertisement-clips “Balkan Beats” elements were use and through this it was recognized by millions as „Zeitgeist-Music“. Since 2005 there is a boom of the „Balkan Beats“, more and more traditional brass bands from the Balkan cooperate with young remixers, that turn their „Balkan brass“-hits into pop productions for radio play.On the double compilation „Balkan Club Night“ you will find “Balkan Brass” classics, as well as modern “Balkan Beats” productions. On the „Primetime“-side are mainly up-tempo tracks starting at 130 BPM, which cause constant pressure on the dance floor. The the classics belong hits like „Kibori“ by Mahala Rai Banda, „Carolina“ by Taraf De Haidouks or „Rindzi“ by Boban Markovic Orkestar. The new school is represented by Buscemi with „Sahib Balkan“, !DelaDap with „Goldregen“, N.O.H.A. with „Balkan Hot Step“ or Magnifico with „Evo Me Narode“. For people with heart problems this side is not really recommendable.On the „Afterhours“ - side of the double compilations are at least a few tracks where you are able to take your breath to while listening. Also here you will find a selection of Balkan Brass classics, like „Mr. Lobaloba“ by Fanfare Ciocarlia, „Djeli Mara“ by Saban Bajramovic, „Siki, Siki, Baba“ by Kocani Orkestar or „Rumba Lu Georgel“ by Fanfare Savale. Comparatively smooth sounds come from Little Cow from Budapest, the Amsterdam Klezmer Band, Zeb from New York, Watcha Clan from Marseille, Binder & Krieglstein from Vienna and Amir Arab from Berlin. You can see that Balkan Brass come mainly directly from Serbia, Macedonia, or Romania, but Balkan Beats is already a global phenomenon. And an early end of this trend is until now not predictable, instead of this it looks like the releases from this genre will become more and more. On the „Balkan Club Night“ - sampler there are 41 of the biggest hits of this genre combined. All that is missing is a big bottle of Šljivovic.
