Strange release this one, bit of a vanity project maybe. With the excellent 'Goodbye W.G.C' album over a year old, S*M*A*S*H release a 12" of remixes. Two of which you can only guess are by main heroes/influences of the band. According to their Facebook page this release is limited to 100 vinyl copies (there was mention of a digital release, but not sure if that meant downloads, streaming or both.Nothing has appeared, yet). As usual with recent S*M*A*S*H output, frustratingly difficult to get hold of. I got my copy from 'Banquet Records', apart from that I think 'Rough Trade' are the only stockists. As for the music, Mick Jones has taken on 'Goodbye W.G.C' which was obviously heavily influenced by B.A.D's 'E=Mc2'.This has been stripped right back to a trancey dancey beat with squiggly noises over the top. Various elements drop in and out as Ed tells the story of 'the days before mobile telephones'. Bit of a grower this one.Cash, one half of dance duo Cash and David gives the treatment to 'Erin'. Not my cup of tea , and really can't recognise the original at all.Finally, the brilliant Youth from Killing Joke has a go at 'Hedy Lamaar' (sic), which is probably my favourite track from the original album. Very much in the style of the first two Killing Joke albums (but a bit more dancey), I reckon this is the most successful of the three mixes.As I say, an odd one, maybe for completists only (S*M*A*S*H, Clash, B.AD, Killing Joke) on vinyl, but certainly worth checking out when/if the streaming comes available.
