I picked this up on a whim, not knowing much of P-love's sound on albums. I saw him live with Kid Koala on tour, so thought he might fit in that realm, with some of the Bully-sound hip-hoppery influence. I wasn't exactly off, but there's more. Disected in terms of similar sounds and possible influences, I hear Kid Koala on turntables, Medeski, Martin + Wood-style downtempo jazz, some Blockhead and Bonobo-type non-percussion samples (though they might well be live sounds), and something of a quiet indie rock kid dwelling back there, too. If you doubt the indie rock bit, skip to "Palisades (Extendomix)" - it's nice to hear it all blended together, and brings to mind the band Roots Of Orchis, lovely stuff without all those silly vocals to muck things up. Amon Tobin's answering machine message is brief, not an awkwardly placed voicemail message, as is oft found on hip-hop type albums. I can't call it "plain" music, but rather it's not cluttered. It could use some more advanced tweaking or arranging to reach it's peak in some places. Definitely great music, rating 4.3 outta 5 for me, but I am looking forward to his progression.
