Yes, Ritchie Blackmore is gone: let's come to grips with that reality first, in order to review "Come Taste the Band" fairly. Tommy Bolin was a fine guitarist in his own right and musicianship isn't the problem here, anyway. Songwriting is. Remaining original members Jon Lord and Ian Paice were almost totally uninvolved in composing this material, leaving Bolin, David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes to devise a much more funk-oriented repertoire. So, while the album has some fairly strong hard rock ('Comin' Home' and 'Love Child', the latter boasting a raunchy riff that sounds like a leftover from "Deep Purple In Rock") and one bizarrely compelling item that's like nothing else in the DP catalog ('This Time Around', Lord's sole credit on the album), as a whole it just doesn't sound much like Purple. It was time to call it a day, and the band knew it.
