Bu
I saw this in a record store and decided to pick it up, hoping for the best. The cover looked terrible. Seeing the wedding track on there sealed the deal, however. In my experience you rarely go wrong with wedding music - it's always boisterous and fun. I need not have worried. If I'd read the fine print more carefully I would have seen that this was collected by Mark Gergis, the same man who brought Omar Souleyman to the west. This is from a different region of Syria than Souleyman but I don't know enough to tell the difference in the music style (if there is any). This compilation concentrates on the mijwiz - the piercing double reed horn (or it's synthesized version). To me the sound of mijzwiz is instant party, kind of like rave sirens. My first thought was to mix this into a techno set but this doesn't quite work. This is mainly because of the way it is mixed - there's very little bass. You don't notice as the overall sound is quite overwhelming but when set against a typical techno production there's a big difference. This is a tremendous collection. No weak tracks at all. Much gratitude to Mark Gergis for doing the work as without being able to read Arabic it's very difficult to find this music. Good luck trying to find anything else by the performers featured here.
