One of my favorite releases from the "Soundclash" label / kru out of Leeds, UK.this four tracker seems to be totally overlooked by UK hardcore / break-beat enthusiast'sat the moment, likely because it was released in '96 which is a bit late for the heydayof that style being '91 - '93. By '96 most of the UK producers who were still activelymaking new tracks were well on to fully developed raga-jungle or drum & bass whichhad by that time become the latest sensation to dominate the underground dance musicscene in the UK. So when this record appeared on the shelves in the record shopsit was mostly ignored by Dj's because it did not really have much in common with most of the other releases that were coming out then. Now to be quite honest, hadit not been for the fact that the second mix of the track "Gasoline" uses a sampletaken from the song "She Brings The Rain" by the seminal German Krautrock legend's The Can, I doubt I would have bought it. The other mix of "Gasoline"I initially liked as well, as the production sounds more like a '92 era breakbeat / hardcoretrack but without any of the cheesier qualities that tend to make it sound too dated.Now the flip side tracks which are called "Cambigil" I did not like at the time becauseI just didn't understand it yet. Now here is the most important point that i'm goingto convey in this long winded review you are now reading which is essentially thatThis record is "proto dub step"!! Meaning A record that sounds very much likethe dub step music music of today except that it was recorded several years beforedub step officially existed. So to conclude, Not only is this a great record in termsof musical quality but it's significance should be noted as a valuable clue intracing back key points in the ongoing evolution of dub step music.
