The reason for this being only a two track CD I guess must suggest that it was originally planned to be released on vinyl. So instead of seven idented tracks you just get the two representing the flip sides. The first time I tried playing this - ironically on a CDR burner - it played just part of the first track then refused to play any more - indeed it gave the impression I had possibly blown the player. Thankfully it plays on my current review player (a Playstation!), so no permanent damage. Indeed, once the first piece starts, you kind of get the impression it might just overload and blow your speakers - a noisy, grizzling miasma of distortions, not unlike early SPLINTERED without the beat, or perhaps TG at their most distorted circa "Maggot Death". "Something Better?" escapes the Death Ray blast and becomes a passive, almost Ambient thing, without actually alleviating the dangerous atmosphere. This mellow edginess carries onto the reverse side. Stripped down and minimal, it's nevertheless a most effective collection and a breath of - if not fresh then at least eagerly welcomes - air. Although easy comparisons surprisingly evade me, there's the deft experimentalism of COIL to this. The final track heads even further towards SPLINTERED yet set to a GODFLESH plod speed. There's even an oblique reference to early PAN SONIC here. There are suggestions of a similar thought process to that of DARK STAR, although the various bits of dialogue tend to fall outside the CARPENTER realm. References to the original HESTON-led "Planet Of The Apes", Indeed, there's even that old trivia trick question - which film did the phrase "Klaatu Marada Niktu" appear in? Well ... "Day The Earth Stood Still" is the obvious answer. But it was later stolen by BRUCE CAMPBELL for SAM RAIMI's "Army Of Darkness", and EMPIRE magazine mentioned that it appeared in "Toy Story", although I couldn't vouch for that. And anyway, I thought it was "Barada"! I still feel this is a dodgy recording, and that it may not be playing 100% efficiently. But even so, it is a thoroughly pleasant journey from harsh spiked metal clowds, through dark gnarly sparse wastelands and back again to the noise. Look forward to the follow-up album.
