Before going into a more detailed, track for track review I'd like to say that, despite the "Electronic Body Music" albums put out by ANTLER-SUBWAY being basically good, interesting albums, this full length offering by a group I had assumed to be mere space-fillers proves that you really need to hear an album by each of the groups featured, rather than just one track. I must say I'm taken by this album - despite it's being 'typical' A-S ware - ie. Dance-Orientated, it delves into more commercial fields while keeping it's own unique identity. The opening track is a self-titled piece 'Voltage Controlled' - marching tympani transformed into jungle dance rhythm - snatches of dialogue about Vishnu are the most obvious ingredients of this medium-paced dance-piece. It goes off the tracks about 2½ minutes in, spinning off in several successive directions, kissing the heels of TANGERINE DREAM about 3¾ minutes in, moody sequencer over which more curious dialogue is played. "America's Attitude Problem" reminds me a little of a more shiny, dancy version of HUMAN LEAGUE circa "Travelogue" with bright blades of sampled fanfare horn and ranting American fanatic voice - it sounds simplistic, although you know there's probably more going on than your ears can easily focus on. "Apocollapse" is the first to show a leaning towards that milestone album "Buried Dreams" - a faster version of "Sound Mirror" without the sonar synth - a rattling good piece of dance floor fodder which flatly refuses to slow down until the final pained cry some 6'10" later. "Silicone Pleasures" is like a Rave track taken, mutated by robots, then set once more to a 'normal' rhythm. The rhythm is complex enough to keep you fascinated listening to it, while remaining powerful enough to burn you on the dance floor. "Cybertron Technoid 829" while sounding like a reference to "The Terminator" actually has a robotic voice which adds the title at intervals, and while the tempo keeps about the same BPM as the others, it has a moody, almost ambient sound to it, punctuated by all manner of sounds including what might be the saucer sounds from "War Of The Worlds". It's a little self-indulgent & meandering, but that's not a bad thing. "Jack Hallucinates" is next, the longest piece on the album (6'48"), entering on a moody, scattered drum rhythm over which play sitar & tabla sounds. About a minute in, a more typical rhythm floats it's way to the surface, bringing with it more spoken word bringing to mind again certain moments from "Buried Dreams". Again it has a warm, soft, moody feel to it, despite being an upbeat track. "Texas" is a far more upfront & clinical piece of dance music, keeping much the same BPM, a bright, minimal piece with neat reverse tricks and other such indulgencies. It has that crisp, sleeves-rolled-up business-like attitude of, say, "Blue Monday" by NEW ORDER, although is clearly an album track. "Raw Bug" starts off with sort-of a cow bell rhythm which is soon overtaken by a determined, eyes-set rhythm which keeps a heady, steady pace. An odd little slow-down /speed-up section changes the track in subtle ways, sounds penetrating which were unheard before. "Quatarr" opens with something Concrete - cut-up tape or manipulated tape with voice & radio waves. This gives way to a more determined, set-jaw rhythm, thick and heavy with all manner of sounds within. It is a lot larger & more raw/brutal than the other material. "Point Blank" is another dark piece, again not unlike CLOCK DVA's classic album crossed with some ART OF NOISE, yet with their own complicated selection of sounds blended in. "Yatiyaña" closes the album with an Ethnic Folk-type thing - pan pipes, deep vocals & slow drums over a deep male voice stretched out to infinity. It turns into a piece which seems to be pregnant with energy, full-to-bursting with speed and energy, swelling, transforming, threatening yet never fulfilling the promise. It's a strange piece indeed, staying close to Trad music, yet shiny with technology & bursting with cybernetic energy.Another recommended album from the 'label you can trust'Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
