The band was formed in 1968 by drummer Jon Hiseman, tenor sax player Dick Heckstall-Smith and bass player Tony Reeves. All three had previously played in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. In addition, Dave Greenslade (organist) and Jim Roche (guitar) recruited. Roche had only on one track he was replaced by James Litherland (guitar and vocals). They had their live debut in Newcastle that was recorded by BBC Radio One DJ John Peel for his Top Gear, so they got fame directly. Their second album, in 1969, was Valentyne Suite Suite, and is considered their best. James Litherland was replaced by Dave "Clem" Clempson for the production of the album, The Grass Is Greener in 1970. Tony Reeves was replaced by Mark Clarke, and John Hiseman recruited Chris Farlowe so Clempson could focus on playing guitar. They brought in 1970 Daughter of Time.
