Dark, brooding, layers of drones, synths, bass, feedback and low end rumbles at the time sounding only similar to maybe NZ's Surface of the Earth. Much less "structured" than their '93 debut, Stable Reference was the recording that really caught my attention. Track's like "Eero" resemble black holes. Something like "Balanced on its own flame" bounce a heavily reverbed and slowed Slint bass adding nearly identifiable vocals topped with the lightest touches of over the top synth swirls and a bit of guitar. All the necessary ingredients to make me dizzy while seated. The album's recurring bass line theme is one that literally frightens me in my dreams. An absolutely essential Kranky release.
