The title EARTHEATER could be best read as EAR THEATER in my opinion because that's what it sounds like through and through. Ambiguity is very much a part of Allen Russell's process - odd juxtapositions make for bizarre soundscapes; A guy mumbling something, played backwards alongside creaky doors and sparse synthesizer rhythms for example. The CD has built up rhythmic concrete tracks from many sources ranging from people's voices to planes flying over, all of which are laid out very abstractly in a rhythmically glitchy kind of way. It's difficult to listen to it all in one sitting, but does have some flowing collages such as "Bound to Happen," although it is hard to tell where tracks begin and end. The "Forever" track is a remix of old Virful Obirs recordings which in my opinion is one of the CDs weakest because the original tracks were good by themselves. Also, the CD gets off to a slow start with much better material later on. Sound sources were collected with mobile equipment in a van (Vanishing Studios) over several years, and 90s Seattle at CCD2 labs and Incubator. The style is hard to classify; it's a weirdly syncopated electrip through a personal sound gallery, with lots of little voices! It uses a lot of computer edited & layered sound samples for the full duration of the CD with rhythmic synth/drum parts alongside. Production is top notch if a bit long winded in parts. Definitely an obscure CD with some highly notable tracks.
