I've become increasingly addicted to this disc in recent months. When I found out Jonathan Sharp from Bio-Tek was also the one behind New Mind and had recordings dating back to the early 90's I decided to check it out. I figured since this was on Machinery records, it couldn't be that bad. Frankly, this is a very strange album in that its quite abrasive and at the same time thoroughly accessible. The beats are pummeling and well, industrial (if I may use such a cliche term), Sharp's vocals are tortured if not a little buried and yet they're juxtaposed with such wonderfully ambient soundscapes one can't help but feel mesmerized despite the chaos of the rhythms. It may take four or five listens before you fully understand what's going on, but after that the cd kept finding its way into my car stereo practically every day on the way to work and back. Those expecting dancy EBM may be disappointed, with maybe the exception of "Guilt" but that track alone could make the cd worth having. Apparently Sharp was quite annoyed at reviews of this album on its release, as most dubbed New Mind a Front Line Assembly clone (they also did this with Bio-Tek) and frankly I'm not hearing any FLA emulation on this album at all. Perhaps a little Skinny Puppy ala 'Last Rites' but really Sharp has a method that's largely his own. So, in closing for all you electro-industrial fans who like stuff on the more abrasive side, this could very well be your next purchase. Spread the word, this forgotten gem is worth it.
