i'm an old school fart. i had been resistant to this kind of music until just recently. there seems to be alot of debate over whether it is "true" dubstep or not? who cares? why is this important. the same debate was had over "true techno" "true drum and bass" "true this, true that. the point is there is something really interesting going on here, and along with the help of others like skrillex, excision, etc. the younger generation is taking hold of modern technology and adding a new spin to electronic music. it's roots are simple to see if you have been around awhile: you take miami bass (along with its crude and crass lyrics from time to time), west coast g-funk kip hop, the noisier end of psychedelic trance, electro, and there you have it. so what is wrong with that? this album is excellently produced, and this whole style of north american "dubstep" plays out like rap battles of old. or breakdancing battles of old. therein lies it's brilliance. yes, in a sense it's about a pissing contest, but SO WERE rap battles, which are generally accepted as a sacred part of the hip hop lexicon, much like breakdance battles. I could almost see excision, skrillex and datsik on stage, playing a joint show, each playing a track at a time, with the whole point being a friendly competition on who can drop the most nasty , digital breakdown. thats another thing i like, is that the breakdown really is the chorus. people give lots of underground artists who have been pushing the envelope of digital music proops for thier styles for years: the prodigy, squarepusher, infected mushroom, etc, etc. people like datsik come from this camp. if they become popular it's not because they are selling out, it's perhaps because the mainstream music buying public is ready for something different. im not saying that i will be buying a tonne of this stuff, and true, now that it is established, i will be interested to see how it evolves. i have liked dub for decades, but i was never turned on by people like burial or digital mystiks, because their sounds were too rooted in past generes that already did dub music much better. yes, i think brostep is a rather stupid, unfortunate name for this style, but whatever the media want to call it, if you like your synths pushed to the extreme, this is the place to go. :)
