This self-titled LP is a worthy purchase if you're at all interested in hearing Caulfield, a sludge-endebted crust/hardcore trio. (Note: On this recording, Caulfield were joined by a second guitarist who subsequently left the band; additionally, the drummer on this LP was later replaced). The cover piece (subject unknown) is both fascinating and disturbing in physical form, but it's the enclosed lyric booklet that's the real draw here, as well as the music on the vinyl grooves. That aforementioned lyric booklet is adorned with intricate woodcut drawings that are reminiscent of artwork used by the band Protestant, or a number of so-called "holy terror" hardcore bands that have existed over the years, and helps cement the overall grim lyrics in your mind. A long, somewhat dystopian poem finishes the booklet, and is a harrowing read. This LP was originally intended as a sort of demo for the band; allegedly, A389 Recordings enjoyed it so much that they offered to release it "as is". Caulfield's molasses-thick sound is ultimately a severe distillation of crust, but there are enough walloping doom/sludge sections on this full-length to satisfy fans of those genres as well. Live, the now-trio transforms into almost pure doom/sludge, adding a welter of guitar effects that aren't explored as fully on their recorded output. In that regard, this eponymous LP is a bit of an oddity: a fantastic presentation, and a descent into the dark conjoining of crust and sludge, but not the clearest representation of the devastation that Caulfield bring live. Suffice it to say, if you enjoy the bilious sounds on either the original black vinyl or the random color repress, you'll gain an even greater appreciation for Caulfield if you're fortunate enough to witness them live at either a house show or a small venue.

I bought mine in a Show in Quebec city with Coldnorth. LP wasn't ready for the tour, so they kept a list of people who bought the cd/LP and gave them the LP sleeve and the cd. I never received the LP.
