Nikobar
This comp (the U.S. version with the red cover) was my introduction to Magazine, the group formed by vocalist Howard Devoto following his departure from Buzzcocks in 1977. Strictly speaking, "After the Fact" is not a greatest hits collection, but it happens to contain all of the band's finest moments with the sole exception of 'Motorcade' from their debut album. There's the coldly ferocious single version of 'Shot by Both Sides' and its pogo-worthy B-side 'My Mind Ain't So Open'; the misanthropic, grotesquely lovely 'A Song from Under the Floorboards' (which, with its unapologetically cantankerous opening line "I am angry, I am ill and I'm as ugly as sin", gave Black Flag a run for their lyrical money); and the eerie, majestic 'The Light Pours Out of Me', Magazine's anthem. The remaining tracks range from fun but lightweight confections ('Rhythm of Cruelty') to unlistenable drivel ('About the Weather', on which original guitarist John McGeoch's presence is sorely missed). Consistency was always a problem for this band: when they were great they were astounding, but when they weren't they were almost unbelievably repellent.
