What happens when a movie director turns his attention towards music? Well, I supposed you'd get something like Vincent Gallo's _When_. Given Gallo's occasionally touchy attitude towards criticism of his films, his music veers towards ambient folk. So even if the track has a silly title like "I Wrote This Song for the Girl Paris Hilton," it takes a loop-based jazz line and eases it into your consciousness. His humming and fragile lyrics on the title track show off his sensitive side -- the side that isn't getting a blow-job from Chloe Sevigny, I suppose. Several tracks, however, suffer from a distinct lack of focus ("My Beautiful White Dog," "Honey Bunny") but these fade into the background quickly. At times, like on "Apple Girl," Gallo seems to be shooting for Air's job, albeit in a more stripped-down manner. Gallo's compositions are freeform and drifting, perhaps a reflection not only of his films but of his entire worldview. Worth a listen, at the very least.
