Fantastic and unique heartbreaking teenage pop EP showing a blasting talent, a particularily arresting vintage yet warming sound blending 50's/early 60's pop-rock (almost doo-wop at times), garage/surf music with late 70's new-wave reminiscent of the Cure's tender moments or the B-52's gone more ruff and raw ; transcended by a sparkling, youthful enthusiasm and playful, provocative queerish lyrics. Unfortunately their story illustrates what can sometimes happen when a young band with a fresh and original vision gets wrecked by some undelicate major company. Black Kids were one of the 'it' buzz of the 2007-2008 season courtesy of this EP (and 4 other, equally brilliant tracks that had leaked at the same period online), then they got major-signed and produced by a vastly uninspired Bernard Butler to give them what these moron executives assumed to be the "indie touch", a little 'boosted' to be radio compatible. The result was catastrophic, replacing the fragile, flamboyant sparkle with a generic, inflated production and ruined their songs and image (some might remember the P4K 'black dog/white dog' pic as a simple 'we're sorry' review), and it's particularily frustrating and unfair as these initial, superfresh versions remain definitely unique and timeless.

Absolutely spot on review, i remember the band releasing the mp3s for free online and listening to them non-stop. When the LP proper came out it was although they had been ruined, like a favourite piece of clothing shrunk in the dryer.
