About the only thing that saves this release for me is the stunning Signalrunners remix of Restless. The original of Restless, I found, seemed typical of melodic trance and, while certainly listenable and enjoyable, was nothing memorable. This was a similar case for Horizons. There is nothing more to really say without using redundant and generic descriptions. Onward to discussing the Signalrunners remix, which does deserve a review. My first instinct of this one was how it could enhance the song's simultaneous feelings of mystery and bliss by working with a small number of elements. Although I wouldn't quite call this song standard minimal trance, because there are still plenty of elements to keep track of, it certainly refuses to boast too many sounds. It feels complete, without feeling busy; and it is somewhat simple, without feeling empty. It found a great equilibrium. The arrangement is quite nice, too. Especially brilliant is how the central melody (in itself a treat) of the song during the breaks is at first hidden in the background by use of a low pass filter, and then jerks violently by opening up, before contracting again, and then expanding yet again to this big room trance sound. If you want to take this to an even more analytical level, imagine this song as a story of someone who is trying to rest, before they become very startled and excited. With each expansion/contraction cycle, more elements are added, including some indistinct "vocal" sample, sweeps that sparkle and flicker, and gadgety percussive samples. It strongly builds the suspense without giving it all away so easily. The constant revolving of the melodies and percussion offer some slightly darker undertones and make it consistently anticipatory. Also, we become somewhat aware of the song's main focal point, but not drawn away from the other special nuances throughout. Great synth works in general, I might add. One of the more nervous sounding melodies that plays again and again in your mind, seeming to communicate (go figure) restlessness and mystery, is quite stirring. This melody creeps in rather gradually beginning at 1:15. The sweeps in particular sound certainly very peculiar. One of them I would describe as almost imitating a whistling tea kettle. Interesting! Restless (Signalrunners Remix) is one of my favorites for 2009, and is evidenced in how it stood the test of time for me from early on the year up until this review. I imagine it will continue to so impress me later on. In my opinion, at the time it was unveiled, this was the best release for Anjunabeats since Super8 & Tab - Elektra in 2008.
