Notes

Box set compilation of Grace Jones first three albums for Island Records with bonus tracks: original 12", 7" and disco versions + unreleased instrumental versions.

Tracks 1-12 to 1-14, 2-11 to 2-14 and 3-13 are previously unreleased.

Track 2-9 is erroneously not the vocal version but a backing vocals only version. This error was corrected for new pressings of this box set (Grace Jones - Disco). Replacement discs were also issued by Universal.
Track 3-2 Suffer is erroneously omitted from tracklistings printed on back of box and on disc 3 but is listed in the booklet.

Tracks 1-1 to 1-3 are a continuous mix.
Tracks 2-1 to 2-3 are a continuous mix.
Tracks 3-1 to 3-4 are a continuous mix.

Released in mainland Europe on 30 April 2015 and in the UK on 4 May 2015.

Anyone know which address to request a replacement disc 2, replacing the incorrect version?

Winenama
Buy this for the audio alone. An essential Grace Jones collectable for sure (the remastered audio and rare mixes are simply to die for) and any official boxset in Grace's catalogue is a very welcome and overdue addition. But sloppy typos / copy, minor sequencing errors on the discs and frustratingly sloppy artwork adaptations prevent this being the truly wonderful compendium and collectable this forgotten era rightfully deserved. The jewel case Gold Legion re-issues of 'Fame' and 'Muse' are far more aesthetically pleasing in terms of honouring the original LP designs. By removing all the text from the three digi-sleeves here, each album design looks painfully bare and incomplete. Plus poor 'Portfolio' is once again left with a frustratingly incomplete CD version thanks to the unforgivable omission of the beautiful original LP inner-gatefold artwork in this boxset edition. Why Island, WHY?!

Buyers who emailed Universal (myself included, around a month ago) were sent a replacement disc with the correct version of 2-9, regardless of point of purchase - though some reported being told to go their original vendor. As others mention, the boxes have since been replaced with the updated disc.

Inertedub
But Universal did send a replacement disc to me very promptly. So that's good - thanks for the tip.

Zyangup
Amazon UK are still selling the incorrect version - just bought one last week and it arrived today.

In the booklet and the press, everyone called this The Disco Years as opposed to the final, edited title DISCO on the box. I'm glad I chose the CD version. The vinyl box would be fab if the discs were red, blue, yellow...ah, no, just black. But only a handful of the extras printed on one 12" - is there a download code free with the vinyl box? Otherwise the buyer loses out on the other songs, and the box set is not cheap.

iSlate
Yes, there is a download code included with the vinyl box that includes all the bonus tracks. The vinyl box is very nicely done, EXCEPT for the non-gatefold cover of "Portfolio" (which I think is the way it was originally released in the UK) and the plain sleeve of the bonus 12". Two minor complaints: They should have included the rare single "Anema E Core" on the bonus 12", PLUS they should have made it a double-12" to include more of the mixes, but I guess I'm just happy that Universal chose this underrated phase of Grace Jones' discography to reissue!

ALMOST PERFECTThis CD box is a must have ! The music has been remastered by Kevin Reeves at Republic Studios in New York using the original master tapes. The sound is really fantastic. The bonus tracks are very good and very complete : 7" versions, instrumental versions, 12" versions... But nevertheless I can only give 4 stars. Why ? On the inside of the cover of 'Portfolio' the pictures are missing. The maxi version of 'Comme un oiseau qui s'envole' appears to be a version without the voice of Grace Jones. On the back of the box the song 'Suffer' isn't mentioned in the track list of the album 'Muse'. And it's regrettable that the lyrics are not included.

Narim
I got my copy of the box set today and to my surprise, it seems I got the corrected version, with the original 12" mix of track 2-9. I bought it through Amazon marketplace, so I guess they've updated their stock.

Lilegha
Interesting that they overlooked the Portfolio album cover has inner pictures on the full, original pressing. The reproduction sleeves' art work look like they are reprinted with archived, original artwork, rather just rephotographing an old sleeve. A shame (very slack) that they made a gatefold cover for the mini LP and left the inside black when they could have found a decent copy of the original LP easily and work with the images if they didn't have the art.

Fenius
I agree with your first 2 points (though from what I can see here on Discogs, the original UK version of "Portfolio" was a non-gatefold cover). With regards to lyrics: they weren't included with the original LPs, so I would not expect them to be included.

FRAY
Track 2-9 is not the 12" disco version of " Comme Un Oiseau Qui S'envole" it is a backing vocals version with choruses, Grace Jones does not sing on it. This is a mistake.

Mojind
Hi ! Do you mean that Grace sings on the entire track ? (Not only the choruses)

Vareyma

I actually got my copy of the box set today and to my surprise, it seems I got the corrected version, with the original 12" mix of track 2-9. I bought it through Amazon marketplace, so I guess they've updated their stock.

Hanad
That TB's moog solo is priceless on this proper remaster of the "surfer". Five stars!.

Wen
Shouldn't it be under Compilations? Also, there's a vinyl version.

Mustard Forgotten
Track 2-9 is not identical to the instrumental verison 2-12 - as it features backing vocals.

Hulbine
Hi ! Do you mean that Grace sings on the entire track ? (Not only the choruses)

I got my copy of the box set today and to my surprise, it seems I got the corrected version, with the original 12" mix of track 2-9. I bought it through Amazon marketplace, so I guess they've updated their stock.

Tam
I've corrected this.

Debeme
the 12" disco version of " Comme Un Oiseau Qui S'envole" is a backing vocals version with choruses, Grace Jones does not sing on it. This is a mistake.

Akir
Having recently tried to separate all her singles and respective b-sides and remixes so I could listen to them "properly," I found that MANY of the single versions of her songs are not available other than on vinyl, including some of the remixes even though a lot of remix material has been made available over the past 15 years or so. This box will fill in the gaps on the disco years. Here's hoping they can compile what's missing from the compass point years so we can have those single versions--some of which were not even available on Island Life.

Ubrise
Marvellous box, no comment on that. But why in God's name, do Muse and Fame have inner photos on the gatefold sleeves and Portofilio NOT? I'm sorry, what an absolute waste ..... the box could've been perfect. Utterly disappointed about that.

Frlas
It is even worse with the cd-box I'm afraid....it does have gatefold sleeves on all 3 cd's but only Muse / Fame have photos on the innerside. Portofolio is simply black. Indeed, who compiles these boxes and what reason on earth can you think of for leaving Portofolio blank (black)?

Arar
Same for the vinyl version. Muse and Fame come with the original gatefold sleeves but Portfolio in a simple non-gatefold version. Who was compiling this box?!?

Ygglune
Are these really digital instrumentals?? Or are they ripped from Vinyl sources ?

Dilmal
Hi Keith, AFAIK these have all been remastered from the original analogue tapes held at the Universal Tape Vault.

Vikus
If you look at the back of the vinyl box (picture from HHV.DE), it talks about the source materials... though I have not seen the booklet to read any additional information -- still waiting for my CD and vinyl copies to arrive!http://www.hhv.de/shop/de/artikel/grace-jones-portfolio-fame-muse-the-disco-years-422037?bc=true

Gavinranara
Oh my God! so we gonna see all Grace Jones albums remastered to perfection along with all 12 Inch and 7 Inch singles as well on this century?Unfortunately this was missing:http://www.discogs.com/Grace-Jones-Autumn-Leaves-Part-1-2-Les-Feuilles-Mortes/master/67435Finally!

Goltikree
Oh that single is a bit unexciting - the 2 parts are just faded out and in respectively....

Trex
The edited US single version of Fame is missing too, along with the UK only version of I Need a Man 7"
