There was a time at 2013 when I discovered that many releases were tagged in bandcamp as "synthwave". I found out that many talented people were making 80s like melodies, mostly based on John Carpenter/Alan Howarth variations, but then there were some others that surprised as being stand outs, many more than nostalgia trips, and this Tommy record was, to me, the best of the very long list of releases I heard that year. This is because he has two great qualities: he knows how to produce, and he knows how to make melodies. "The new wave" begins with an impressive set of arpeggios and synths slightly modulating like a Neon Indian song - though the reference to Daft Punk is pretty clear, mostly when the acid bassline kicks in - and then a set of gloriously long tracks follow. You can pick your favourite in this set, with funky synth pop, hi nrg and disco galore, but my favourite one is, by far, Sally Shapiro singing "Why Did I Say Goodbye", one perfect song to dance alone in the middle of the disco. Incredibly good, one of my favourite recent albums.
