Jesmi
I tried so very very hard to properly get into this one but to no avail. Perhaps I'm spoiled because of Rudy's brilliant material from the past. After all, it's a well known fact that aggro artists - if they last that long - tend to mellow out in time. Mellow, is certainly the operative word here (or at least mellower). And while I feel that every release should be judged on its merits and not on comparison, I find it hard not to think about how this release could have been very different. The production is top notch. Very clean, and almost minimalist. Ironically, that might be a bad thing, since it doesn't have any of that "dirty" Wumpscut feel to it. The music. Well, I have to give the man credit for being able to put together a bunch of sounds, many of which would sound dreadfully cheesy on their own (there's a sound in the title track that sounds like it might as well be out of Mario Bros) but somehow take on a different feel. The vocals are also different. They're deeper, less in your face - and one helluva lot less angry. He also makes greater use of girl vocs. Like I mentioned previously, this release is difficult to comment on because of the comparison factor. Where a lot of long term fans hated it, other were delighted. It's well put together for what it is - something almost ambient to quietly die to, rather than the destructive and almost explosive material we've been treated to for so long. My belief is that he should have waited longer and perhaps confined this direction to a side project - but then again that's just speculation. Incidentally, you get a remix disc with this. Again, I'll give the man much credit for being prepared to take remixes from a fair number of unknown artists (ironically, the best known artist - Suicide Commando - had one of the least impressive remixs), but none of them really "shone" ("darkened"?). The general tone of the mixes is mellow and harmonic - certainly nowhere near the utter darkness and dread for which Wumpscut is renowned. So I wonder, does the fact that all remixers took that direction suggest that, as musicians, they understand better than anyone what direction Rudy is heading?
