What happens when you try to play it the normal way? Does it play backwards or is it a locked groove?

Not much would happen other than the needle being pushed towards the outside, the groove runs in the opposite direction of a normal record. The reason this it's done is because on a record, the inner section is quieter than the outer section, so it's used to get an effect of a piece that gets louder as it plays rather than quieter as would usually happen. In this case it's probably for the Trent Reznor remix.
